Academy Records artist statement In all the projects, elements of theme and character direct the relationship between the format information might take and the distribution methods for that format. This leads to projects that incorporate vinyl records, CD's, publications, sculptures, drawings, concerts, performances, and exhibitions using an interdisciplinary approach to form. Recently, most of the projects have been produced in collaboration with other artists and performers under the moniker of Academy Records. Producing works in a variety of formats and styles under the Academy Records name is intended to unify disparate materials, deemphasize the importance of a single author, and allow for changing groups without changing the name for each project. A constantly revolving group of musicians, writers and visual artists who contribute to Academy Records is integral to the pluralistic approach to materials and form that is the base for my approach. The process of navigating individual aesthetics and abilities in Academy Records, shifts attention to the channels of distribution and structure that cohere the disjunctive parts into a single project. This concentration on systematic production in turn emphasizes the vernacular gestures and historical motifsfor example, the expectations of a musical performance, or the narrative conventions of Victorian dramathat results in the finished the works. The combination of vernacular gesture (aesthetics) and historical motifs (context) exposes what I call resident forms: products that embody the manner in which location, process, and context drive personal selection of materials. When making artwork under my own name, my theme and focus is the same. The works focus on the context of presentation, most often using text and image together to create obvious historical, social or formal juxtapostions. |
