Sandra Perlow

Artist Statement

Sandra Perlow’s mixed-media drawings and paintings are recent developments from the artist’s trip to Assisi, Italy in the summer of 2008.  Perlow was influenced by the forms, color, and patterns that she observed in her walks around the city and touring the major cathedrals. She was particularly interested in the light coming from around some of the figures in the frescoes on the wall of the cathedrals.

The surfaces of Perlow’s work relate to surfaces that have accumulated layers of history; whether it is Italy or other places Perlow has visited.  Each work is a syntax of images taken from the artist’s childhood memories, travel, literature, and art history.

The artist says that her work drives itself as she constantly shifts and moves forms. This constant push and pull in decision-making relates to the building up and paring down the composition in a search for a more visual harmony.
